East Bay woman ID'd as one of Southern California plane crash victims

FIVE passengers on board a small plane have all been killed after it crashed into the auto park of a shopping centre. The nearby intersection of Sunflower Avenue at Bristol Street was closed in all four directions near the crash, just northeast of the mall and on the city boundary between Costa Mesa and Santa Ana, OCFA Capt.

No one on the ground was injured, but an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot was extensively damaged.

The pilot of the Cessna 414 declared an emergency before crashing about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from John Wayne Airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac said.

The plane also hit a auto, but no one in that vehicle was reported injured. Tony Bommarito, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.

"We looked up to see the plane falling nose first", she told the Times.

"I don't know anything about what this pilot did or what he was thinking, but it could have been much more tragic", Bommarito said.

All five victims were passengers on the plane, according to the report. The cause of the incident will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, with the assistance of the FAA.
