Radio telescope picks up new frequency in space

FRB signals were first observed in the year 2001 with help of pulsar survey of the Magellanic Clouds but scientists and researchers didn't mention them until 2007 in their studies and discoveries.

"The automated pipeline triggered the recording to disk of ~20 seconds of buffered raw intensity data around the time of the FRB".

Described as one of the most mysterious phenomena in the universe, a group of scientists this week reported picking up a deep, energetic radio signal coming from somewhere in outer space.

Here's what it looks like. According to the sources, this is the lowest frequency FRB in history - picked up by CHIME at a frequency below 700 MHz. The signal, known as Fast Radio Burst (FRB), lasted only a matter of milliseconds.

The latest FRB, which was detected by researchers at the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment in British Columbia, was allegedly the first to be heard between the much deeper frequency range of 400 to 800 MHz, rendering it a much lower signal than numerous FRB episodes before it.

CHIME stands for Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Telescope, and has four 100-meter-long (328 foot) U-shaped cylinders to detect signals from the universe between 6 to 11 billion years old.

This unprecedented discovery was presented yesterday in the journal Astronomer's Telegram by Patrick Boyle of McGill University in Montreal, Canada, who elaborated on the characteristics of the other radio signals.

Apparently, it is said that all these signals come from the Milky Way but few of them are dated back to billions of years ago. "These events have occurred during both the day and night and their arrival times are not correlated with known on-site activities or other known sources of terrestrial RFI".

This most recent one, named FRB 180725A, is notable because of its low frequency of 580 megahertz.

One thing is true: whatever this signal is - be it the result of a star exploding, black holes merging or just a hell of a party from the aliens, scientists will not be able to find its origin with today's technology. FRB, was by astronomers here on Earth are incredibly large distances from sources located so far away in space that we can't even see them.

Despite the fact that FRB are signals, they contain no information that could extract researchers or astronomers.
