Samsung officially announces the Galaxy Tab S4 to take on iPad Pro

There aren't many options out there for new Android tablets lately, though, so if you're set on getting an Android tablet, you don't have many other options. In my short time with the Tab S4, it felt like a totally competent device, and with the addition of Dex to make performing certain tasks a little smoother, it's definitely a more well-rounded device than the Tab S3.

That's mostly as the tablet has dropped its home key from the front of the tablet. Again, it's a 10.5-inch display with a resolution of 1668 x 2224.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 is the successor to the Galaxy Tab S3. That means it' heavier, taller and thicker than the last Samsung model. And the LTE version of this tablet will also be available for purchase starting August 10, 2018 at Verizon. As with Apple's tablet, there's an optional keyboard ($150) to turn this Android model into a 2-in-1 laptop.

Maybe Samsung was waiting for the right moment to make its Galaxy Tab S4 public, but Best Buy beat the company to it. There's 4GB of RAM powering the tablet with the choice of either 64GB or 256GB of storage, depending on how much you want to spend.

As for the iPad Pro, you'll find it packing the Apple A10X Fusion chipset, which is a variation of what we saw running in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. That's largely because the tablet was announced in June previous year, but again it should be powerful enough to do everything you need it to do on a tablet. That SoC is paired with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB or 256 GB of onboard storage.

For the Tab S4, DeX isn't a dock but a USB adapter. Android isn't flawless to use on tablets, but it has improved a lot on slates in recent years. You can also continue to use it as an Android tablet, so you could keep a video playing on the tablet while you continue to work on a PowerPoint presentation on another display.

The Tab S4 supports all your standard Android apps and virtual desktops via Citrix and VMware. Recording capabilities are up to 30fps 4K. The device also ships with its own stylus and a 7,300mAh battery, which can reportedly run the device for around 16 hours of video playback.

"Obviously aiming for the iPad Pro, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 comes with a 10.5" WQXGA display.

If you are interested in note taking or drawing, then you will love the S Pen that comes with the Tab S4.

Ultimately, the choice between these two tablets comes down to what you will be using it for and the price. That's a big price jump compared to 2016's iPads, but it's a similar price to what we'd expect for Samsung's next tablet.

The Tab S4 pushes the limits of productivity by adding Samsung Dex support (official Dex page), which is the ability to use apps in Windowed mode with or without an external monitor. There are a lot of similarities between these two devices, but also some very meaningful differences.
