The ban also means a healthier working environment for the people who work in public housing complexes.

The movement is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's ban on smoking in public housing, a rule that was passed almost two years ago in November 2016. Multiple fires in central IL were caused by indoor smoking, like the fire at Concord Apartments that claimed the life of one man this year.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that about one-third of multi-unit housing residents reported experiencing secondhand smoke that involuntarily entered their home from other areas on their building.

Smoking is no longer allowed inside public housing nationwide starting today.

The ban includes cigarettes, pipes, cigars and water pipe tobacco (hookahs). This, after a number of homes caught on fire because of indoor smoking.
