President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, claims Donald Trump was aware of the infamous meeting before it occurred.

Cohen claimed Trump knew in advance and approved of the June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower where his son Donald Trump Jr., son-in-law Jared Kushner and campaign manager met with a Kremlin-linked lawyer, CNN reported on Thursday night.

Trump tweeted, "NO", he "did NOT know of the meeting with my son, Don jr". "If they rely on him ... it would destroy whatever case they have".

Rudy Giuliani, the President's lawyer, called Cohen a liar and said he has a credibility problem.

That meeting is now one of the central threads of the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's election interference, whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow, and whether Trump sought to obstruct justice in the investigation. "Do you think the Fake News Media will ever report on this tweet from Michael?" the president questioned.

Giuliani's appearance on Sunday came after he told ABC News Trump's legal team had split with Cohen and ended the joint defense agreement the two parties previously shared.

President Trump has long denied having any knowledge about payments made to McDougal and denies having an affair with her. Karen McDougal even claims that Trump tried to Pay her after sex. Democrats, however, say they believe the issue speaks to the president's character (79 percent) as well as national security, but Republicans disagree, seeing it as a deliberate attempt to slow the president's agenda (81 percent) and feeling he is facing more resistance from the political establishment than other presidents have (86 percent).

Mr. Giuliani defended his prior comments calling Cohen an "honest, honorable lawyer".

"These are tapes I want you to read", Giuliani said on CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday. The raid on Cohen was part of an investigation into whether Cohen helped Trump pay off another affair with porn actress Stormy Daniels.

Mr Trump suggested Mr Cohen was implicating him in exchange for possible immunity on unrelated charges related to his businesses.

However, Giuliani claims that he, himself, is unauthorized to release these tapes to the public, which he alleges contain around 183 different conversations.

"He expressly waived attorney client privilege last week and repeatedly and inaccurately - as proven by the tape - talked and talked about the recording, forfeiting all confidentiality", Davis said.

Earlier this month, Nunberg was reportedly pitching himself for television appearances with the description of "Michael Cohen's Friend".
