Kiwis to get glimpse of blood moon

In a special treat, Mars is also at its closest approach to Earth this week since 2003, making it appear bigger and brighter.

Avid astronomers and amateur stargazers the world over were treated to an incredible lunar light show when the moon transformed from its usual bright color to an orb of burned orange and red for almost two hours.

It won't be visible in the US, but can be seen in parts of Africa, the Middle East, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia - depending on the weather. For viewers in India, the eclipse, both partial and the total, will be visible in its entirety from all parts of the country. These latter events, which occur when the moon passes into Earth's shadow, are safe to view directly with the naked eye, telescopes or binoculars.

The further away the moon is, the longer it will spend in the shadow - known as the Umbra - of Earth. According to NASA, India is one of the best places to watch the total lunar eclipse.

In Dunedin, hundreds of people gathered at Signal Hill lookout hoping to catch a glimpse of the full lunar eclipse. In metro cities, space enthusiasts may miss out on watching the moon being eclipsed due to pollution.

The so-called "blood moon", when it turns a deep red, will be visible at different times in Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.
