Officials say there may be an increase in mosquito activity due to recent heavy rains.

The pools of mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus were collected in unincorporated areas of Sarasota County near Venice, an area that Sarasota County Mosquito Management Services has already treated. In these cases, the City uses the safest chemicals available in very low volumes and sprays only as needed. "And then if you live in Lowndes County, you can go by the Public Works department and get free Larvicide to put around your property", said Sheeley.

The West Nile virus season is under way with human or mosquito detections in 11 counties across the state, the state Health Department reported Thursday.

The City of New Orleans is holding a news conference Friday with the Health Department to update the public on the latest West Nile findings.
