When Rowse suggested letting people respond to the alleged environmental threat of plastic straws as they see fit, Councilman Jason Dominguez unfurled his totalitarian colors, declaring that "we can't always count on common sense", and therefore, "we have to regulate every aspect of people's lives". "Probably the same people responsible for the ban on plastic bags".

What's happening in San Francisco?

On July 24, San Francisco took the first step to join the movement when city supervisors unanimously approved a ban on plastic straws and takeout containers treated with fluorinated chemicals. If it passes, businesses offering food and drinks within the city must make the change starting January 1, 2020.

Americans use almost 500 million plastic straws every day.

These metal straws are one of the most popular on the market for a reason: They're super durable, won't absorb the flavor or smell of your drink, are non-corrosive, and most can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

Trump Org CFO subpoenaed in Cohen probe
Cohen privately testified a year ago to two Congressional committees investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election. But perhaps the highest-stakes denial was given by Trump his testimony past year to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Elsewhere in Los Angeles County, Manhattan Beach followed two months after Malibu by passing a ban on bars and restaurants dispensing straws in April. "We have adopted compostable straws in certain markets - like Seattle - to meet regulations", McDonald's told Nation's Restaurant News. "Today's announcement is more than about reducing single-use plastic waste, it's also about showing millions of kids and adults from around the world the many ways we can change our daily habits to care for the oceans and protect nature that sustains us all", Sanjayan said.

"Legislation in the USA on straws varies by jurisdiction". Starbucks, for one, announced earlier this month that it plans to eliminate them from its stores by 2020.

Santa Barbara's Environmental Services Outreach Coordinator said that the new, strict fines and jail times are aimed more at the businesses that continue to use plastic straws after initial warnings about the new bill: "Jail time or stiff fines are not the intent for first-time offenders". Hilton Hotels and Hyatt Hotels Corp. have said the same, according to The Associated Press. Vail Resorts, owner of Northstar, Heavenly and Kirkwood at Lake Tahoe and sister resorts in Colorado, Utah, British Columbia, Vermont and the Midwest, has also banned plastic straws.

As of now, cities choosing to ban plastic straws through legislation are among a small minority and not everyone is supportive. How many of these shortsighted folks have jumped on the bandwagon calling for bans on plastic water bottles and/or plastic straws? "I feel erased by these attitudes".

These straws are usually made using only bamboo so you don't have to worry about any added dyes or chemicals and will likely have a straw that lasts for years. Why or why not?
