Trump Org CFO subpoenaed in Cohen probe

Cohen's assertion is highly important: if he can back it up, it could be a key step toward proving collusion between the Trump campaign and a Russian effort to help Trump win the presidency - a central focus of the probe by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Trump, his son, his lawyers and other administration officials have repeatedly said Trump did not know about the meeting until news of it broke in July 2017.

In a tweet early Friday, Trump once again denied any knowledge of the meeting and cryptically suggested Cohen is "trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam".

Cohen reportedly does not have evidence to support his claim about the meeting.

Cohen privately testified a year ago to two Congressional committees investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Trump has been seething at Cohen since the recent tape's release, raging to confidants that he could not believe he was being betrayed by someone he worked with for a decade, according to a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to discuss private conversations. If he mentioned the crucial detail to House investigators it was not included in their massive report on the matter.

Since leaving his post as Trump's lawyer in May, Cohen has criticized the Trump campaign for taking the meeting with Veselnitskaya, including in an interview with ABC News' chief anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The fact that he is a first time offender also played in his favor in avoiding setting foot in prison. Messi was consequently sentenced to 21 months in prison in another suspended jail sentence.

Joy Behar found it "hilarious" that Rudy Giuliani is now calling the President's longtime lawyer a serial liar, saying both Cohen and Trump are taking cues from Roy Cohn's playbook.

He added, "I don't see how he's got any credibility".

But now Michael Cohen - the former personal lawyer of the president - has claimed that Mr Trump was aware of the meeting beforehand, which took place at Trump Tower in NY. "We are very confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Mr. Trump, Jr., and on his behalf".

Democratic lawmakers have pointed out that two days before the meeting in Trump Tower, Trump announced plans to give a "major speech" about Clinton's scandals. He's under scrutiny by federal prosecutors in Manhattan after Mueller referred Cohen's case to them.

Trump Jr. stated that he expected dirt on Hillary Clinton from the meeting but came out empty handed. Sekulow's response: "Yes, I swear".

But perhaps the highest-stakes denial was given by Trump his testimony past year to the Senate Judiciary Committee. But a source close to him told the Journal that the Trump Organization CFO did not have knowledge of what that money was ultimately for.
