California ticket wins $522 million Mega Millions jackpot

One person in the United States is NZ$761 million better off after scooping the winning prize in California's Mega Millions lottery.

This year, 20-year-old Shane Missler of Port Richey won a $451 million prize on January 5, and Richard Wahl of Vernon, N.J., won $533 million on March 30.

The five numbers are 1, 2, 4, 19, 29. Ernie's Liquors will get up to $1 million for selling the winning Mega Millions ticket.

If the victor takes the cash payout, they'll net just over $308 million. The jackpot was the fifth-largest for the Mega Millions game, a lottery official told ABC News.

At least one winning ticket was sold in Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing.

The results from other states had not come in yet as of Tuesday night. You can buy a ticket for $2 and pick six numbers from two different pools.

The odds of winning were one in more than 303 million. You'll be taking home a far smaller but still impressive sum of $308.1 million - before taxes.

The jackpot will reset for Friday's drawing to $40 million.

The biggest Mega Millions prize ever won was $656 million, which was split three ways in 2012.
