Froome support 'phenomenal' for Thomas as Tour title nears

Pau: Yellow jersey holder Geraint Thomas is "expecting the worst", but warned ambitious rivals that going too deep on the final day in the mountains could end their Tour de France podium chances. "Hopefully we'll have strength in numbers and he'll be able to just follow, as well", Thomas said.

"Obviously, it hurt me enormously and everybody close to me and the team", Demare said.

Whether it's Tom Dumoulin and it's two minutes is unlikely. The final stage of the 2018 Tour de France is on Sunday, wrapping up in Paris Champs-Elysees.

Colombian climber Nairo Quintana won the short but extremely hard mountainous stage with a solo attack up the brutal finishing climb to Col du Portet. "We gambled and we lost, but we gave it a good crack anyway".

Yates surged clear on the last climb of the 218km Stage 16 - the Col du Portillon - and was 22 seconds clear of a Julian Alaphilippe with just 10km remaining.

"I think you have to put yourself out there in the breakaway and it's really up to the bunch whether you stay away", Durbridge said.

Bahrain Merida doctor Emilio Magni said on Thursday: "The team and the rider agreed to the decision to have a percutaneous vertebroplasty surgery".

Froome, a four-time champion, finished the stage in eighth place at 1:35 behind Colombian victor Nairo Quintana and 48 seconds behind teammate and overall leader Geraint Thomas.

At the pre-race ceremony to present the teams in La Roche-sur-Yon, Froome and his team were greeted with boos, jeers and whistles, while in previous races the Briton has had urine thrown at him and been taunted by fans brandishing giant inhalers.

Lunar Eclipse July 2018
Others have called this lunation the Full Thunder Moon, since thunderstorms tend to coincide with the height of the summer months. Mr Kirkley said that the sunrise would begin during the eclipse which would "wash out" the colours of the moon as it turned red.

Geraint Thomas, wearing the overall leader's yellow jersey, passes through fields of sunflowers during stage 18.

A day earlier, Thomas and Froome were temporarily blinded by pepper spray that had drifted downwind after police had tried to break up a protest by farmers. It was the 70th time that the Tour passed through Pau, which first hosted the race in 1930.

Thomas, whose performance was also a reflection of the mighty work of his teammates - Dutchman Wout Poels and Colombian Egan Bernal - took no pleasure from Froome suffering.

"It was a very hard day for me and I suffered a lot not just because of the injuries I have from my crash but also from the heat".

"Froomey said on the radio maybe with four or five kilometres to go that he wasn't feeling super and that gave me confidence", admitted Thomas.

"I definitely felt it".

Tour organisers introduced innovation with the top 20 placed riders, much like in Moto GP, starting on a grid according to their times in the general classification.

Two stages to go, then. But Thomas' own pedigree in time trials should not be overlooked after he won the British title in June. Despite Movistar's struggles in the battle for yellow this year, the team is well-built to contest the stage win high up in the mountains, with Quintana, Mikel Landa, and Alejandro Valverde leading the way.
