Sergio Marchionne, who died on Wednesday (Jul 25) at the age of 66, was little known when he took the driving seat at Fiat in 2004.

What we do know so far is that Marchionne underwent surgery on his right shoulder several weeks ago and that he had confirmed business appointments for late July.

This year also saw the Alfa Romeo brand return to F1 as part of Marchionne's vision to get the Italian manufacturer even greater global exposure and drive profits for FCA.

"Unfortunately, what we feared has come to pass. Sergio Marchionne, man and friend, is gone", Elkann said.

He was supposedly meant to step down from the role in April 2019.

Marchionne built the dysfunctional companies into the world's seventh-largest automaker nearly by personal force of will, living on a corporate jet crossing the Atlantic to push employees to accomplish what most people thought was impossible amid a devastating global recession.
