Jurgen Klopp defends Loris Karius after latest error

The 25-year-old spilled Oliver Norburn's free kick into the path of Jonny Smith, allowing the winger to pull the first of two goals back for the hosts.

It was another bad mistake that seems to suggest Karius is struggling to throw off the psychological scarring he sustained against Real Madrid in the Champions League final at the end of last season.

"Until he has a few fantastic games you can not change [the criticism]". We can't make a story after each mistake. Our job is to support Loris, that's our part of the deal.

Whilst this match was just a friendly game, both Klopp and Karius will be desperate to put an end to these mistakes.

Klopp was irritated by Liverpool's second-half display and by the continued focus on his German keeper, although that was unavoidable after an untimely error even in a pre-season friendly against League Two opposition.

He was replaced by former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti in May with the Naples club seeking to end Juventus' dominance in the league.

Loris Karius may be feeling the pressure from Liverpool fans, but the goalkeeper has the full backing of his manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool take on Bury in their next pre-season game on Saturday and Keita will be hoping to continue the eye-catching performance.

He was asked how attention could be diverted away from Karius, saying: "You can stop it by not asking, promise?"

It appears that one of the Tranmere players wasn't too impressed with Karius' howler, and he showed him little sympathy.

"Two brilliant footballers make this mistake, which one was bigger? We need to cool down the whole situation; let's play football, let's work on our weaknesses and use our strength and then everything will be good".
