Blockbuster Video down to one United States store

An iconic American entertainment business is down to just one location. That leaves a lone Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon as the last man standing in a video chain that, at its peak, had more than 9,000 stores, half outside the U.S., and employed more than 84,000 people worldwide.

If movie-streaming seems like Goliath, Blockbuster video store owners are an industry's Davids still fighting to keep the brand alive. She said she has been working at Blockbuster for 14 years and seen her share of heartache as stores closed.

Blockbuster might be on its last legs in the United States, but a handful of Australian stores and kiosks are keeping the brand alive. The video rental chain once flourished throughout the country, but eventually filed for bankruptcy after streaming took hold of the American consumer.

Two of Blockbuster's last three stores will close on Sunday. By 2013, there were only 13 stores left in America. All but one gone.

"We hope to see you at our stores during the closing, even if it's just to say "Hello, '" the final two shops" managers posted in a Facebook announcement on Thursday. Pledging to donate the items to a worthy cause, Oliver zeroed in on two of the last remaining Blockbusters, located in Alaska, promising that if one of them contacted the show, they could display the memorabilia in their store.

"We have a great customer base", he said, "and it kills us to tell these customers that we're having to close down".

"You would not believe how much business we got just from that memorabilia alone", he said.

"Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years", Daymude said in a heartfelt message on Facebook.

"It's always kind of a kick in the trousers every time we close a store", explained Payne. "We have thought of you as family for the past 28 years".
