IL cop resigns after dispute over Puerto Rican shirt

A police officer seen in a video "doing nothing", while a woman was being harassed by a drunk man for wearing a Puerto Rico flag shirt, has resigned.

Prosecutors are considering whether to file hate crime charges in the case, Cook County state's attorney's spokeswoman, Tandra Simonton, said Thursday. He had previously be charged with misdemeanor assault for the incident.

Trybus could face up to five years in prison for each of the hate crime charges.

The officer has been identified as Patrick Conner of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Police Department, So an older racist yells at a young Latina because he doesn't like what she and other Puerto Ricans living in "his" community he says represent. Trybus is then seen asking her if she's an American saying, "Are you a citizen?"

But the officer, Patrick Connor, turns his back and walks towards his patrol auto.

Footage of the incident, captured on Facebook Live last month, has gone viral, and it even drew the attention of Puerto Rico's governor. He resigned from his post on Wednesday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

"You're not American, if you were American you wouldn't wear that".

At a news conference Thursday, officials said they will use the incident as a teachable moment for new recruits and plan to increase diversity training.

Tamara Cummings, general counsel for the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council said about the deplorable incident: "The video does not look good, but anybody who is a football fan knows that the video does not tell the whole story". She tells a police officer who is watching the scene "Officer, I feel highly uncomfortable, can you please grab him?" but the officer turns and walks away.

The Forest Preserves of Cook County confirmed that Officer Patrick Connor no longer works for the department following an incident filmed on June 14, which went viral almost a month later. "Are you a United States citizen?"

Caldwell Woods is part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Meanwhile an investigation into the incident continues despite the officer's resignation.

Ms Irizarry calls on a nearby park police officer for help. They also said that more officers responded and arrested Trybus when the first officer asked for assistance on the radio.

On Twitter, he said: "We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background".

"It was truly appalling, gut wrenching and a real wake up call", Cook County Commissioner Luis Arroyo Jr. said. "Then you should not be wearing that". Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917 and have the right to vote in U.S. presidential primaries but not in presidential elections.
