After months of industry rumors and speculation, Warner actually moving forward with their Joker origin film, with Academy Award-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix having been officially cast in the title role. Will it be The Joker narrating his own origin to the camera, giving Phoenix most of the film to play outside of any makeup and create a dramatic story that won't feature any insane plots or superhero setpieces? Phoenix entered talks to take on the role this past February, but this was far from a done deal as the Oscar-nominated actor had previously been in prolonged talks to lead Marvel's Doctor Strange before ultimately backing out.

"Warner Bros" DC label, outside of Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad, hit a wall with Justice League last fall which significantly under-performed making $657.9M.

Under the direction of Todd Phillips (The Hangover franchise), the new film centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen.

A release date hasn't yet been announced, but shooting will begin in September in NY. Whether Warner Bros will risk an R-rating too remains to be seen.

The studio has yet to lock down a release date for this Joker origin movie just yet, but it's expected that it could be released in late 2019, assuming everything stays on schedule.
