Donald Trump: NATO allies should double defence spend goal

"Now we have to rebuild that democracy and strengthen it. North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is going to take a significant role in that, and Canada is going to commit 250 troops, a number of helicopters, and we are actually offering to command that mission for the first year", Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced at the summit.

"Many countries owe us", added the President.

Germany's energy relationship with Russian Federation has long frustrated Washington and Eastern Europe, who fear that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that bypasses the Baltic nations and Poland could be used to cut them off from crucial energy supplies.

Referring to her own past living in the now defunct East Germany, Ms Merkel added: "I personally experienced how a part of Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union. But other presidents never did anything about it because I don't think they understood it or they just didn't want to get involved".

In 2017, the alliance saw its biggest increase in defense spending "in a generation", he said, signaling to his aggrieved ally in the White House that "we see that all Allies have started to increase defense spending based on the national plans we have agreed to develop previous year". And then he singled out Germany in particular with a new claim, alleging that Germany is, quote, "totally controlled by Russian Federation". So you tell me, is that appropriate? The United States pays about 67 percent of its gross domestic product on defense, more than any other nation, although only 3.5 percent is NATO-related.

Additionally, as German officials later pointed out, Germany has also helped lead the sanctions on Russian Federation in the wake of the invasion of Crimea.

He also suggested he could find time to talk to his "friend" Boris Johnson, who left Mrs May's Brexit negotiations in chaos by resigning as Foreign Secretary.

"We will continue to stand together and act together, on the basis of solidarity, shared goal, and fair burden-sharing", it said.

"We have had discussions, we do have disagreements, but most importantly we have decisions that are pushing this alliance forward and making us stronger".

Trump's attacks on Germany focused on two major issues: defense spending and spending on energy imports from Russian Federation.

Alluding to Trump's comments about Germany, Kerry also said that "European energy security is an important topic for allies to discuss, even when they disagree".

"It's very important that we have these exchanges together because we are partners, we are good partners and we wish to continue to cooperate in the future", she told reporters. "Well they could increase it immediately, tomorrow, and have no problem", Trump said.

Mr Trump is the 12th sitting U.S. president to make such a trip, and will spend time with the Queen and prime minister before flying to Scotland to spend the weekend at his golf resort.

Although administration officials point to the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom, Trump's itinerary will largely keep him out of central London, where significant protests are expected.
