It would also give him a last-8 clash against Juan Martin del Potro, the 5th seeded Argentine, or unseeded Gilles Simon of France.

Roger Federer advanced to a record-extending 16th Wimbledon quarterfinal with a 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Adrian Mannarino of France on Monday.

On Monday, as the light faded and the fixtures in front of him lengthened, Djokovic was denied a Centre Court appearance when Jamie Murray and Victoria Azarenka were moved there instead for what turned out to be a thrilling mixed doubles triumph. He then had to play on the Tuesday and was forced to quit in the second set of his quarter-final against Tomas Berdych on the Wednesday when his chronically sore serving elbow flared up. Former world number one Djokovic has a 13-2 winning record against the Japanese player.

Djokovic, seeded 12th, won easily over Russia's Karen Khachanov, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

Angelique Kerber converted her seventh match point to finally get past Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 7-5 and reach the Wimbledon semifinals for the third time.

Centre Court will rarely have played host to a more one-sided set than Monday's opener, in which Mannarino was embarrassingly outclassed for the most part. Back in 2008, Nike were so sure the pair would meet in the US Open final that even before the event started they launched an advertising campaign trailing the match.

"I don't think it's something anybody aims for, to win every match in straight sets", Federer said.

"I didn't miss much so I was very happy with the match", the eight-times champion said after booking a last-eight date with South African Kevin Anderson.

Federer has now won 32 consecutive sets at SW19, leaving him just two short of his best run in the tournament, achieved across 2005 and 2006.

Eight boys rescued from Thai cave in good mental, physical state
The Guardian reported on Tuesday afternoon local time that a ninth and 10th boy had been pulled from the cave. He said he would be leaving the mini submarine behind in Thailand "in case it may be useful in the future".

So it's no wonder that Tsisipas, now 19 and one of the game's emerging stars, made a point of rewatching Federer's 2001 match against Sampras last week, the night before making his debut in Wimbledon's main draw.

Germany's Julia Goerges apologised after beating close friend Kiki Bertens to progress to the first semi-final of her career at Wimbledon.

"It's definitely helped a certain style of player, maybe the big servers", said 20-time major victor Federer.

Rafael Nadal is in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the first time since 2011.

Jelena Ostapenko became the first Latvian woman to reach a Wimbledon semifinal with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Dominika Cibulkova.

He has also won both their meetings on grass, including at Wimbledon in 2011. Facing Roger again [would] be something fantastic.

"But if you ask me if I prefer another one, I say yes. It's about being smart, no?"

It won't be pretty.

Between them Raonic and Isner occupy the top two places in the ace count and fastest serves. Raonic has the fastest serve of this year's Wimbledon at 147 miles (236.5 kilometres) per hour, while Isner is just behind on 144mph (231.7kph).
