Afterwards, Hamilton lamented being unable to delivery victory for home fans which would have also seen him nail a record sixth British Grand Prix.

The takeaways from the weekend are Ferrari beat Mercedes at a track that should suit the Silver Arrows much better than the Prancing Horses, and that Hamilton will sweat blood in order to claw back the championship lead from Vettel, who now has 171 points to the Briton's 163. Vettel pushed Bottas aggressively with ten laps remaining, but the Finn did enough to stay just in front.

Vettel's fourth victory of the season came in the British Grand Prix, a race that the four-time Formula 1 champion had not won since the 2009 season. Vettel will now head into his home race at Hockenheim, Germany a week on Sunday eight points clear of Hamilton.

"The credit should go to him, together with Sebastian that was driving today like a lion with the pain he got on the neck".

Hamilton also acknowledged the fanatical F1 supporters at Silverstone on a scorching hot afternoon. "Obviously, in practice I didn't do any long runs with the mediums but from our calculations we should have been okay, but it wasn't".

John Grant, chairman of the British Racing Drivers' Club, has warned Formula One's owners that while they can take the sport to "Timbuktu", they will struggle to replicate the history and passion at Silverstone. Ricciardo's Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen was battling with Raikkonen but his race ended at lap 48.

Raikkonen received a 10-second penalty at Silverstone after tapping Hamilton into a spin at the start, while Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel was given a five-second punishment for colliding with Valtteri Bottas at the start of the French GP.

"It's a tough day, to leave having lost points having been on the pole, but it is the way it is".

I wish I could have birdied the two par fives but looking back, all in all, I think it was a good day. If I had 100 putts every week I played and hit the ball halfway decent, I'd win every week".

He said: "If somebody comes along and wants to pay an attractive price for anything, you have to put your commercial hat on and think about it commercially, not emotionally".

"It was interesting tactics, I'll say, on their side, so we'll do everything we can to fight them in the next race". "Obviously some others are more aggressive but it's about racing fair and square and having the best vehicle".

"Kimi had a good start, we have the telemetry data, so he found himself immediately on top of Hamilton". After the race, Hamilton walked away from the interviews conducted in parc ferme and went straight to the cool-down room. In both cases, the stewards penalised the Ferrari drivers for the incidents.

"The reality though was that you heard Lewis complaining about damage to his floor".

"I would have loved for us to build a gap in Austria, Montreal and Silverstone because we lose some in Hungary and we lose some in Singapore", he added. However with just five laps left in the race, Vettel muscled his way past the Mercedes and took the lead of the race.

Some saw that as very harsh, especially when Vettel had received half that for making contact with Valtteri Bottas in France.
