Wheeler worked for Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe, as well as at the EPA's Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics.

Mink took her 2-year-old to a Washington D.C. restaurant, Teasim, where Pruitt was dining.

Steven Mufson captured the nature of most of the stories for the Washington Post.

He has always been a harsh critic of climate change science. But Hart was later forced to admit he had met with Pruitt at EPA headquarters last summer after his firm, Williams & Jensen, revealed he had lobbied the agency on a required federal disclosure form. Three moderate Democrats - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN, and Joe Manchin of West Virginia - joined with Republicans to support Wheeler IN April.

On Friday, Murray Energy CEO Robert Murray released the following statement about Wheeler's elevation.

Trump said he had been discussing Pruitt's exit for a "little while".

When Wheeler was confirmed, Pruitt praised him in a statement, writing, "Andrew Wheeler has spent his entire career advancing sound environmental policies and I look forward to him bringing his expertise and leadership to the agency". He also recognized the need for reliable, low cost electricity in our Country, overturning many illegal actions by the Obama Administration.

Others were less enthused, with Massachusetts Democratic Sen.

Asked by Sciutto how Democrats would block Wheeler should he go through the confirmation process, Sanders said they will need to "get a handful of Republican senators ... and get them on board to demand that Trump appoint an EPA administrator who represents the American people and not just the fossil fuel industry".

Matt Dempsey, an energy lobbyist at consultancy FTI, said Wheeler will be less controversial than Pruitt but without altering the agenda.

When he was still working as a lobbyist in 2016, Wheeler wrote a six-point takedown of Trump on Facebook. In them, he noted that Trump gave money to both political parties over the years and said Trump was a successful PR person but not a successful businessman.

Senator Chuck Grassley, Republican from Iowa: "Fewer things are more important for government officials than maintaining public trust". In June, he told the Washington Examiner that he liked his current job and did not want to run the EPA.

"I am the deputy administrator", Wheeler said. I could have tried to be the administrator. Thank you again Mr. President for the honor of serving you and I wish you Godspeed in all that you put your hand to. I am still not interested in that.
