"It would be tough for Pompeo to squeeze a timetable out of North Korea this week, but he at least needs to get them to announce a rough roadmap for denuclearization", Choi said.

Pompeo tweeted that he spoke with Mr. Trump, who offered a positive omen for the talks, while he was in the air. He says that he believes Kim Jong-un "sees a different future for the North Koreans". "I hope that's true".

A day after the summit, Trump announced that the USA was canceling joint military exercises with South Korea that the North has traditionally called practice for an invasion.

"Nothing could be further from the truth".

"Our leaders made commitments at the Singapore summit on the complete denuclearization of North Korea and outlined what a transformed US-DPRK relationship could look like", he said while still en route, according to comments relayed to reporters on his plane by spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

According to sources, the Secretary of State will present Kim with the CD along with a letter from Trump, who has frequently refered to the despot as a "little rocket man" in speeches. The two leaders did not, however, sign off on any details as to how denuclearization would be achieved and monitored.

It is unclear whether he will meet Mr Kim in person. Pompeo said the word "complete" encompasses "verifiable and irreversible", and the lack of the two words was an argument over "semantics".

North Korea could also deliver the remains of some American soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War. "We'll see. All I can tell you is this, you haven't had one missile launch and you haven't had one rocket launch".

Key issues include securing a declaration of all of North Korea's nuclear arsenal, a verification regime for dismantlement and a timeline for denuclearization.

Their "max fac" alternative would, rather than scrapping customs checks, use technology to minimise the need for them. Our correspondent says the government has now deemed both options practically or politically undeliverable.

This does indeed fir with what some other officials have said of Kim's priorities, including North Korean state media.

He plans to have a day and a half of meetings with the North's officials to follow up on Trump's summit agreement with the North's leader Kim Jong-un.

Outside a small farming village four hours south of Seoul, elderly farmers wearing T-shirts reading "Let's harvest peace by ousting THAAD" work in melon fields before marching in protest against the controversial US anti-missile system.

He downplayed concerns that improved relations will be accompanied by the easing of sanctions and pressure on North Korea, saying that the progress in inter-Korean projects will depend on whether appropriate conditions are created.

"I think we understand each other".

"This stand has been suggested as the probable location [Trump] was referring to in his post-Singapore summit statements that North Korea is 'destroying their engine site".

But experts say it will be a long while before the United States considers withdrawing THAAD, which was deployed previous year. "Was North Korea's intention to continue what they were doing, albeit less provocatively, by not doing ballistic missile and nuclear weapons testing?"

"Pompeo returns to Pyongyang under less than ideal circumstances". Kim has also met with China's President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. Broadcasters had live coverage of Trump greeting the freed prisoners at an airfield near Washington, D.C.
