A suspected carjacker is in the hospital after a woman shot him as he tried to take off in her SUV with her two children in the back seat.

Michelle Booker-Hicks was at the Shell station along Interstate 35 around 10 p.m. Wednesday when Ricky Wright, 36, attempted to steal her vehicle while she was paying her gas bill, police said.

She jumped into the vehicle.

She then opened her glove box, pulled out a gun, and shot Wright in the head, according to police.

After being shot, Wright crashed the vehicle into a light pole and was transported to a local hospital.

Booker-Hicks and her kids were not hurt. "I told him that I needed some bullets for my gun and he told me that he was going to go get it", she said.

'I'm not a killer or anything, but I do believe in defending what's mine, ' she said.

She said she told the man her children were in the back seat and to pull over but he didn't listen, so she went to the glove compartment and grabbed the gun.

"I should have just emptied the whole clip but I didn't".

"I hope that woke him up", Booker-Hicks said.

Neither Booker-Hicks or her children were injured. She also said that she had just recently purchased a gun to keep in her auto - which is legal in Texas, even without a gun license. Emergency workers took Wright to the hospital where doctors treated him for his gunshot wounds sustained in the carjacking attempt.

She spoke with Fox 4, but asked that the outlet not show her face. It's just one of more than 20 arrests on Wright's record, some of them for drugs, assault, and theft.
