Luckily for Brunning, her friends and family were nearby and quickly puller her back onto their yacht.

Brunning told the West Australian that she didn't realize she shouldn't hand feed a shark, until the animal became "like a Hoover", sucking her right index finger into its mouth full of rows of razor-sharp teeth.

The 34-year-old was on vacation at Dugong Bay-a remote area brimming with saltwater crocodiles and sharks-when the attack occurred.

MELISSA Brunning was on a "once-in-a-lifetime" trip cruising the majestic Kimberley on a friend's superyacht, so when an opportunity arose to feed a placid shark she was scared, but her adventurous spirit willed her to give it a go. "I could only think about how I lost a finger". "The only way I can describe it is this enormous pressure and it felt like it was shredding it off the bone".

The good news was her finger was still attached to her hand - she sustained cuts, a fracture and a torn ligament, but it was still intact.

Tawny sharks are usually peaceful creatures but will bite when they feel threatened.

England end penalty jinx to edge Colombia in shootout
England and Colombia were deadlocked after 120 minutes in Tuesday's World Cup Round of 16 meeting. Diego Maradona claims Colombia were robbed against England . "I'm very good at it", he added.

"I came up and I said I've lost my finger and I couldn't even look at my finger because I thought it was gone, and I thought if I looked at it I'd probably go into shock".

But the wound ended up getting so infected that she needed to have an operation when she got home to have it cleaned.

Brunning, however, admitted that the incident was her fault, and that it was not a shark attack.

Despite the freak incident, Brunning said she continued to carry on with her vacation as planned.

She warned others to be careful and not hand-feed sharks. I have full respect for sharks, I think they're incredible. The worst thing to do would be to play dead, as sharks are also scavengers and will not mind having an easy meal.
