Climber on Statue of Liberty base after hanging anti-ICE banner

At least one person was trying to scale the Statue of Liberty after a banner reading "Abolish ICE" was unfurled at its base Wednesday afternoon. In a tweet, the group said the person climbing the statue has no affiliation with the earlier protest. The protestor still sat at the base of the Statue of Liberty, near the foot of the monument, as of 5 p.m., he says.

Activists with the group Rise and Resist said they hung the banner to protest us immigration policy.

"The Climber on the Statue of Liberty has no connection to our #abolishice action earlier today", the group wrote on Twitter. "We've had two unusual events occur back-to-back", National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis told Eyewitness News.

The banner said "Abolish I.C.E.", referring to part of the Department of Homeland Security. ICE is a division of the Department of Homeland Security whose officers arrest and deport unauthorized immigrants inside the USA, among other duties.
