Five people were killed and two injured as a chartered plane crashed in an open area in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area on Thursday afternoon.

The aircraft, under maintenance with IAPL, was airborne on a test flight for an hour and preparing to land at Juhu Airport, when the mishap occurred, the company said and informed that it was slated to start regular operations soon.

The plane had been bought in 1995 by the Uttar Pradesh state government, which made a decision to sell it after the crash in 2012 caused damage that required costly repairs, said Surya Pal Gangwar, a state civil aviation official in Lucknow, the state capital.

The others on board included woman aircraft maintenance engineer Surabhi, who was more than two months pregnant, her colleague and aircraft junior technician Manish Pandey, both employees of Indamer Aviation Pvt Ltd (IAPL).

Thursday's incident becomes more important since the plane, which took off from Juhu, crashed merely three kilometres away from the global airport. He said test flights shouldn't be carried out in poor weather.

The King Air C-90 aircraft was on a test flight with two pilots and two engineers on board, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a statement.
