A man is in police custody after allegedly stabbing nine people, including six children at a toddler's birthday party.

Now Timothy Kinner is facing charges in connection to the mass stabbing. Police say he briefly stayed at the apartment complex but was recently asked to leave because of behavior problems.

A candlelight vigil was planned Monday evening, and several organizations and individuals were launching fundraising campaigns to help cover the victims' expenses. As the news spread across the Treasure Valley, members of the community showed up at the complex in a steady stream, bearing meals, flowers, a unicorn pool floatie.

He was not a refugee himself but had been staying with an acquaintance for a few days, police chief Bill Bones told a news conference.

Authorities had not yet released the child victim's name and said they were waiting until additional notifications were made to do so.

According to police, Kinner has an extensive criminal history spanning several states and spent time in prison for crimes including violence against others.

Timmy Kinner has been charged with first-degree murder after the death of a three-year-old girl who was celebrating her birthday. Police said Kinner is not a refugee. Most of the refugees in the complex are from Ethiopia, Iraq and Syria. "We had children from different continents sitting at a small child's birthday party".

While speaking to reporters, Bones said the apartment complex residents were a "tight-knit" community.

An official from the International Rescue Committee praised Boise for its support of refugees.

Police said they responded to a call shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, local time, about a knife-wielding man at an apartment complex. The three other victims were adults who tried to intervene. "This was an attack against those who are most vulnerable". "The level of the some of the injuries will be life-altering in a very negative way", Bones said.

The national media quickly seized on the fact that the apartment complex was known to house refugees and that some of the victims themselves were apparently refugees. That was where Kinner reportedly directed his attack, targeting the children first, he said. Police said that person and additional neighbors became concerned with Kinner's behavior and asked him to leave on Friday, which he did peacefully. His motives and reasons for the attack are still under investigation.
