Yoga Day 2018 celebrated all over the world

Downward-facing dogs, cobras and warriors were set to sprout all over the world Thursday, as the fourth annual International Yoga Day got under way.

Bhubaneswar: People from across Odisha rolled out their yoga mats, twisted and turned as they basked in the goodness of International Yoga Day celebrations.Even before daybreak, people from all walks of life irrespective of age were seen thronging to yoga camps and practice asanas to join the swelling number of enthusiasts worldwide.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev led a gathering in Rajasthan, whose chief minister said it was the largest group yoga event.

Yoga became known in the West towards the end of the 19th century as it was undergoing a major revival in India under the Hindu teacher Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902).

A series of yoga related events are also being organised across the world to mark the occasion. He said Yoga not only helps keep the body free of diseases, but also strengthens the mind and intellect.

"Dehradun to Dublin, Shanghai to Chicago, Jakarta to Johannesburg, Himalayan highlands or sunburnt deserts, yoga is enriching millions of lives all over the world", the PM said. He also highlighted the fact that Indian government has honored Nouf Marwaai, the first Saudi woman and certified yoga instructor, with the Padma Sri, one of the highest civilian awards of India for propagating yoga in the Kingdom.

Modi is keen on portraying his physical prowess, last week posting on Twitter his morning yoga routine involving plodding around a tree and flexing over a boulder.

In his address, the Prime Minister said from Dehradun to Dublin, from Shanghai to Chicago, from Jakarta to Johannesburg, yoga was everywhere.

Artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created a special sand sculpture with the message "Yoga for Peace and Harmony" on a beach in the eastern city of Puri. "Doing your day-to-day activities with diligence and complete awareness is a form of yoga as well", he said. "On 21 June, join Yoga Day celebrations".
