Police officer rescues young boy running on busy highway

In a video of the pulse-pounding rescue, Mannino is seen jumping out of his vehicle to get the child.

Mannino tells CBS Chicago he first thought the boy was a stray dog.

Mannino stopped his squad auto in the right lane, keeping the lane clear of traffic, and then ran up to the child while shouting at him to stop and "come here".

Sgt. Anthony Mannino was driving on Route 59 when he saw the boy running along the right lane of the highway.

The department presented Sgt. Mannino on Thursday with their "Life Saving Award" for his actions.

An Illinois police sergeant is being hailed a hero after rescuing a young child who "escaped his mother's watchful eye".

The child wasn't injured.

The boy ran out of his house while his mother wasn't looking, according to police. No charges were sought in the case.

The police department says Mannino last week received its lifesaving award for his efforts. "I just wanted to get to him quickly and make sure he had no opportunity to move".
