The France global, who is in Russian Federation for the World Cup, joined Monaco in 2015 from Caen and made his worldwide debut in November 2016.

Atletico Madrid have announced they have made an agreement in principle with Monaco to sign midfielder Thomas Lemar.

Sources told ESPN FC that Atletico star Antoine Griezmann worked actively to bring Lemar to the club and is excited to play with him.

But any desire to sign Lemar was ended when Atletico Madrid reached a preliminary agreement with AS Monaco to sign the 22-year-old on Tuesday.

There are a number of alternatives to Fekir and many wondered if Liverpool would pursue Thomas Lemar, who they were linked with last summer.

Having previously stated that he would announce his decision before France's opening World Cup game on Saturday, Griezmann chose to keep quiet. "The decision is complicated, I am calm", he said.

"I am very sorry, I know you have all been waiting but I will not give my decision today".

Barcelona have failed to progress beyond the quarter-final stage in three seasons since last lifting the Champions League, being knocked out by Atletico, Juventus and most recently Roma.

France boss Didier Deschamps predicted earlier in the week that Griezmann will not be leaving La Liga, telling the French press that he "will remain in Spain".

Griezmann has scored 112 goals and assisted a further 40 strikes in 209 games for Atletico since his arrival at the Vicente Calderon in 2014.
