On Wednesday in Moscow, the trio bid of the United States, Mexico and Canada beat Morocco in a vote to earn the hosting rights to the 2026 World Cup.

The North American bid received 134 of the 203 votes, while Morocco polled 65 in the ballot at a FIFA Congress held in Moscow on the eve of the 2018 World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup will be expanded to 48 teams in 16 groups of three and will consist of 80 games in total.

"Football today is the only victor".

Two Miami residents - newly-elected U.S. Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro and Donna Shalala, a U.S. Soccer board member - were deeply involved in the bid process.

Now, that dream is very much alive. "Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege".

The US, Mexico and Canada were considered favorites in the lead up to the voting process, given the financial and infrastructural solidity of their bid.

President Donald Trump's negative comments on African countries and his bid to tighten immigration restrictions on some nations have likely helped Morocco's cause.

Canada has played host to numerous Federation Internationale de Football Association events in the past, including the men's Under-16 World Championship in 1987, the 2002 under-19 women's World Championship, the 2007 men's Under-20 World Cup, the 2014 Under-20 Women's World Cup and the 2015 Women's World Cup.

"Thank you so, so very much for this incredible honor", Carlos Cordeiro, president of the US soccer federation, said after the vote was taken.

Of the 16 host cities, 10 will be in the United States while the remainder will be split evenly between Canada and Mexico.

The 2026 World Cup final will take place in the MetLife Stadium in New York City.

FIFA Announce Major Overhaul of World Ranking System to Make Standings 'Fair & Logical'
US, Canada and Mexico to host 2026 FIFA World Cup

Despite the latest setback, Morocco vowed to continue its bid to host the tournament in future.

With a handful of games in Mexico and Canada but the majority in the US, the 2026 bid promises the richest and most lucrative tournament in the history of global soccer.

The 1994 World Cup, staged by the USA, had the highest average attendance in the tournament's history, while Mexico was the first nation to host the event twice.

In April, Blatter had tweeted: "Just recall a fundamental principal in FIFA: Decision taken in 2011: the congress shall decide on the attribution of the World Cup 2026 - and not any sub-committee or task-force".

Morocco was scored 2.7 out of 5 by FIFA's inspection task force, which marked the North America bid a 4 in the report last month.

Infantino's speech at the annual congress of 211 members signals the next presidential election period starting.

Los Angeles is one of 23 proposed host cities and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena one of the stadiums under consideration as a match site.

The only two official bids came from the U.S. -Canada-Mexico of North America, and Morocco of Africa.

The 2018 tournament kicks off in Russian Federation on Thursday and the 2022 World Cup is to take place in Qatar.

The vote leaves Morocco reeling from a fifth failure in a World Cup hosting vote, with the continent's sole tournament coming in 2010 in South Africa.

Every one of FIFA's 200-plus members holds a single vote, and regions tend to vote in blocks.
