Europe could lose out in North Korean bonanza

Officials here in China expressed optimism about this week's talks between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, adding that if the process leads to de-escalation of military tensions, the USA should consider removing troops from the Korean Peninsula.

But he noted that the "war games" with South Korea that Trump said he will end, will continue if the North Korean leader doesn't follow through on his commitments.

In their joint statement Kim agreed to the "complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" a stock phrase favoured by Pyongyang that stopped short of longstanding United States demands for North Korea to give up its atomic arsenal in a "verifiable" and "irreversible" way.

Trump also said in a separate tweet that North Korea is "no longer" the US' "biggest and most risky problem", telling Americans and the rest of the world they can "sleep well tonight!" "No longer - sleep well tonight!" the President wrote.

Logically, Trump should receive no credit if you believe he brought us to the brink of war with North Korea and then pulled us back.

The US secretary of state has said Washington will demand "complete, verifiable and irreversible" denuclearisation.

Several topics were discussed Tuesday during Trump and Kim's summit, including the "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."

"I think over the weeks that they spent with us, they gained greater confidence that we are sort of no-nonsense but efficient people", he said.

Trump, seemingly unprompted, has long wanted to withdraw the US from South Korea, and now he may have found a reason.

On the other hand, Russian Federation and China, who joined North Korea in criticizing the joint military drills in the past, welcomed Trump's decision. The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August.

"So I reject that analysis that it costs too much, but I do accept the proposition, let's stand down [on military exercises] and see if we can find a better way here".

The Republican chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Corker, said it was hard to assess what had happened at the summit.

Any reduction in tensions on its doorstep is welcome for China, North Korea's closest ally, which accounts for around 90 percent of Pyongyang's trade.
