The Trump-Kim peace summit has been downgraded to a half-day

This summit, which was earlier expected to be about talks around North Korean denuclearisation, may now be just about the two leaders "meeting each other" as was said by Trump in a press conference at Charlevoix in Quebec where the G7 summit took place.

In the weeks leading up to the summit in Singapore, Trump praised Kim as "very honorable" and "very open", a stark contrast from the "Little Rocket Man" moniker Trump had previously bestowed on the North Korean leader.

Yet Trump and Kim have yet to agree even on how to define denuclearization of the Korean peninsula - the stated goal of the meeting.

President Trump is expected to meet separately with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday.

When Donald Trump meets North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday for perhaps the most significant nuclear talks since the Cold War, the American president will have his link to the US nuclear arsenal nearby at all times.

Dare I say it, conventional politics would not have got us to the point where we are now. They'll be joined later by their staffs for an expanded meeting and a working lunch.

But Mr Trump warned "he was prepared to walk away" if the summit did not go well.

Both leaders have arrived in Singapore in preparation for their much anticipated, historic first encounter.

Meanwhile, U.S. and North Korean officials huddled at the Ritz-Carlton hotel Monday ahead of the sitdown aimed at resolving a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

On the streets, Kim and Trump impersonators thrilled around 100 fans who paid $10 to take selfies at Bugis Junction mall at the weekend.

North Korea has so far presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to his neighbors and to the United States as a logical next step following what Kim has claimed is the completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent to what Pyongyang has long claimed is a policy of hostility and "nuclear blackmail" by Washington.

Asia stocks shook off initial modest losses and edged up on Monday ahead of an historic U.S.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement that the meetings were "substantive and detailed" but there was no immediate word on what the outcome was.

In exchange for North Korea's cooperation, the administration is offering Kim both security guarantees and economic aid.

Many experts on North Korea, one of the most insular and unpredictable countries in the world, remain skeptical Kim will ever completely abandon nuclear weapons.

It's not clear if he had shipped over the massive bulletproof and fireproof limousine that became a social media sensation when Kim was shown being driven across the border between the Koreas during his first summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in April, with a dozen staunch bodyguards encircling the auto.

Kim's summit with Trump has captured intense global attention after a turn to diplomacy in recent months after serious fears of war a year ago amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests.

The leaders of the U.S. and North Korea are gearing up for their historic first meeting which, if successful, could put to rest longtime fears of a war on the divided Korean Peninsula. "We now know they have a pretty good track record in these negotiations - a flawless track record of cheating every time, so that's the context we now face".

"I think he would look at it very favourably so I think that could happen".
