What are your thoughts on the Redmi Y2?

The body has a brushed metallic finish, with a rounded back cover that gives the handset a premium look and makes it comfortable to hold. We got some time to spend with the device and here's what we think of it. The Redmi Y2 provides incredible value, but there are other devices from Xiaomi that offer quite a bit more for your money.

On the specifications front, Redmi S2 features a 5.99-inch HD+(1440 x 720) display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Viewing angles of the display are good and it is also readable under sunlight. The price of the smartphone is not specified.

Jokes apart, the Snapdragon 625 is a reliable processor that combines high performance with exceptional battery efficiency. I said in my review that the M1 is a better value-for-money smartphone and that the industry needs good competition. The choice of microUSB over USB Type-C is disappointing though.

The phone has a 6.0-inch screen and it features smaller bezels at the top and bottom of the display. This reduces photo noise, captures more light, and enhances photo quality when shot in low light. The front camera is 20MP with LED flash. Redmi Y2 offers portrait selfies and digital makeovers with Beautify 4.0, a software that simulates makeup. Too much vanity, really. Xiaomi has claimed improved usage of the infrared sensors in dim lights, which can help the face unlock feature work in dark conditions. The dual camera setup consists of a 12MP primary camera with 1.25μm pixel size, phase detection autofocus, f/2.2 aperture and a secondary 5MP camera. The technology allows for bokeh effects where the background is blurred and the foreground is in focus. Xiaomi, to recall, had launched the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus, together. The phone will be fueled by a 64-bit octa-core processor clocked at 2GHz, while Android 8.1 Oreo will come pre-installed on the phone, along with MIUI.

The launch event also saw the global launch of MIUI 10. While the MIUI 10 update version 8.6.6 for the device is already out, it is limited to only a select few who have taken part in the closed beta program in their home country of China.

The Moto Z3 Play was launched yesterday and it is certainly a capable smartphone given its hardware specifications. Big props to Xiaomi for offering the same. It will be available in two variants - 3GB RAM with 32GB storage or 4GB RAM with 64GB storage.

It will also, naturally, be an Xbox exclusive, but we're not sure if that exclusivity applies to a possible PC release. And right off the bat, they delivered with a new installment in their most popular exclusive franchise.
