Yahoo tried to revive its Messenger service by updating its Android and iOS apps, apart from its Web counterpart past year in December. The desktop version was killed off in 2016 and, with Yahoo! transitioning from a standalone company to a piece of Verizon's Oath content network, many chunks of the old Purple Palace are destined for the scrap heap.

Yahoo! has announced that on July 17, it will officially shut down its long-running Messenger client and service. Those who will be still clinging to the ages-old messaging service will be redirected to the new group messaging app Squirrel, The Next Web reported.

After July 17, Yahoo points out, even if you still have the Yahoo Messenger app installed you won't be able to sign into it.

Yahoo Messenger launched on March 9, 1998 as Yahoo Pager, and then got its iconic rebranding on June 21, 1999.

Before smartphone and mobile apps became very popular, Yahoo Messenger remained as the most popular messaging application.
