There is no doubt that the Capitals are playing with house money at this point, a three-game lead, and one more shot to win at home.

The Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup for the first time in their history by coming back to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday. The Redskins' Super Bowl XXVI win in January of 1992 was the last DC squad to win a championship. The Super Bowl was played on January 26, 1992, making the drought stretch to nearly six and a half years at this point.

The second period of Game 5 was absolutely incredible.

But the Capitals have perhaps suffered some of the city's worst blows in sports. Yet for all of his goal-scoring prowess and athletic swagger, the Great Eight had never won an Olympic gold medal or a Stanley Cup title. The team scored in the third period or overtime in 20 of 24 games in the playoffs. Then the Penguins defeated the Caps consecutively in 2016 and 2017 during the second round of the playoffs.

Beat the Penguins? Done, in six games.

Washington, D.C., has had, by some measures, among the most miserable sports fans in the United States.

After decades of disappointment, the Washington Capitals simply wouldn't be denied.

Maybe the Capitals can turn it around this year for the city.

Ovechkin can finally get the respect he deserves with this win.

Washington Capitals right wing Devante Smith-Pelly, left, scores the winning goal against Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury while falling to the ice Thursday during the third period in Game 5 of the NHL hockey Stanley Cup Finals in Las Vegas.
