According to The Hollywood Reporter, Val Kilmer's Iceman will be returning alongside Maverick for the sequel.

Val Kilmer has reportedly been confirmed for a Top Gun Sequel titled Top Gun: Maverick. The film also starred Kelly McGillis, Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins.

"Friends said it's official - #TOPGUN2 was announced today", Kilmer wrote on Instagram. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. "An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent..." The sequel will reportedly find the fighter pilots feeling ineffectual as drone strikes are making their skills irrelevant in modern war. In fact, no one even knows if Iceman, real name Tom Kazansky, will still feel the same way about Maverick as he did at the end of the original, when he told him, "You can be my wingman anytime".

In Top Gun: Maverick, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is back in action as an instructor at the Top Gun training base.

Cruise shared the first photo from the set of the Top Gun sequel last week, posting a pic of himself stepping right back into his old uniform.

The movie will be direct by Joseph Kosinski, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Films along with Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media.

Iceman's role in the new film has not been revealed, but the story line for the Top Gun sequel follows Cruise's Maverick character as he mentors a new generation of young U.S. Navy fighter pilots.
