Smoking Down, But Tobacco Use Still A Major Cause Of Death, Disease

A shocking video has revealed the full extent of the damage caused to the heart by smoking.

"Although often associated with ill-health, disability and death from non-communicable chronic diseases, tobacco smoking is also associated with an increased risk of death from communicable diseases". Apart from this, tobacco cause 7 million deaths globally every year. Smoking and consumption of tobacco are really harmful to us.

He named Ireland and Uruguay as countries which had achieved the highest level of tobacco control before adding that since 2007, the number of people around the world to have benefited from these measures has more than quadrupled, from one billion to five billion.

The agency pointed out that tobacco use is responsible for around 17 percent of the almost 18 million deaths from cardiovascular disease around the globe each year.

Dr Tedros Adhanom, WHO chief, yesterday called for more awareness over the links between smoking and heart disease.

Around 40,000 people die of smoking-related diseases in the country every year, and numerous diseases like cancers, cardiovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are leading death causes in Vietnam, he noted.

"Tobacco doesn't just cause cancer".

Free counselling was also provided to people who wanted advice on how to quit smoking.

CASES of coronary heart disease that require special treatment are increasing from year to year, according to the number of registrations at the Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC), which recorded 143 patients in 2016 and 152 the following year. It focuses on tobacco use as a key risk factor for developing heart and heart related diseases, including stroke.

Smoking also unleashes poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide, which replaces oxygen in the blood - reducing the availability of oxygen for the heart. Most of the cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and cancer types, including some 80-85% of lung cancer are caused by long-term smoking.

The study pointed to the slew of anti-smoking measures introduced to France as a likely reason for the decline.

In India and Indonesia, meanwhile, more than half of all adults do not know that the habit can lead to a stroke.
