Want to move to Vermont? You might qualify for up to $10K

Vermont has a small and rapidly aging population-and with that, a shrinking tax base.

But there can be tax implications for living in one state and working in another. Its governor this week signed a law to spend that kind of cash recruiting between 300 and 1,000 people to move there, provided they have remote working jobs with out-of-state companies. In addition to the remote worker plan, Vermont has also launched a program called "Stay to Stay Weekends" aimed at convincing the state's 13 million annual tourists to relocate there. As The Burlington Free Press notes, the state is aging faster than the rest of the U.S., and has the third highest median age in the country. It takes effect as of January 1, 2019.

Meantime, you get up to $10,000-spread over your first two years-and you live in a truly handsome state. To qualify for the funds, you need to be a full-time employee of an out-of-state business who works from home.

Under the terms of bill, a new remote worker may be eligible for a grant under the program "for qualifying remote worker expenses in the amount of not more than $5,000.00 per year, not to exceed a total of $10,000.00 per individual new remote worker over the life of the program".

The program will peak in 2020, when $250,000 will become available.

Gov. Scott's administration is attempting various strategies for attracting workers to the state to bolster the economy. In March, Gov. Scott and the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing announced the Stay-to-Stay initiative, a program created to help tourists permanently relocate to the state. "We want to learn from what the Legislature has asked us to do with this particular program and then see what lessons we can learn to apply that to other efforts to recruit workforce".

"This is a piece of a much larger puzzle", said Schirling, the commerce secretary.
