The events represented the largest escalation between the IDF and Gaza's armed groups since the end of the 2014 conflict, but ended on 30 May after intensive talks between the militants and Egypt.

That is "a total of more than 4,000 surgeries, half of which will be carried out by ICRC teams", he said.

"This epic health crisis took place against the backdrop of multiple, protracted, chronic crises affecting all sectors of life in Gaza". "I think such a caseload would overwhelm any health system in the world".

Israel has long said it would not tolerate such attacks from Gaza.

"It's a fact that there [were] weapons made in Iran used last night and this shows the involvement of Iran in the Gaza Strip", an IDF official in Southern Command said on 30 May.

By late Tuesday, Israeli aircraft had hit 55 facilities belonging to militant groups in Gaza, including a cross-border tunnel under construction, in response to the Palestinian barrages, the military said.

Then Hamas and the smaller Islamic Jihad militant group bombarded southern Israel with rockets and mortars Tuesday, and Israel responded by striking targets throughout Gaza.

But while Mardini voiced hope the boost in aid would help, he cautioned that it was far from a permanent fix for Gaza which has sky-high unemployment, limited supplies of electricity and clean water, and a sanitation system unable to cope. Over a hundred have died and thousands have been wounded since the "Great March of Return" began two months ago.

They peaked on May 14, when at least 61 Palestinians were killed in clashes as tens of thousands of Gazans protested the USA transfer of its embassy in Israel to the disputed city of Jerusalem the same day.

The Kuwait-sponsored draft resolution "deplores" and demands a halt to "the use of any excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate force" by the Israeli military, while it also "deplores the firing of rockets from the Gaza Strip at Israeli civilian areas".

The violence was the most serious escalation since the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas and followed weeks of Palestinian protests in which more than 100 Palestinians have been shot and killed by Israeli forces.

More than 13,000 Palestinians have been wounded, including more than 3,600 by live ammunition, some multiple times, and there had been almost 5,400 limb injuries, ICRC said.

"The people of Gaza do not need protection from an external source".

"The recent demonstrations and violent activities along the Gaza border. have triggered a health crisis of unprecedented magnitude", Robert Mardini, who heads the ICRC's Near and Middle East operations, told reporters.
