Police officer shoots armed suspect at Dixon High School

UPDATE: 11:53 a.m. EDT-The shooting at Dixon High School in IL took place on Wednesday morning inside the school's gym, where students were gathered to practice for graduation, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing City Manager Danny Langloss.

Langloss says it happened at 8:06 a.m. when a 19-year-old former student fired shots near the west gym.

The father of a Dixon High School student was shaken after finding out that a gunman was shot Wednesday morning at Dixon High School.

Howell said the suspect fired several shots at the officer as he tried to get away, but the officer was not injured.

Scheidegger says she's been the neighbor of Mark Dallas for over a decade and says the veteran officer's son, a senior at Dixon High School, was also inside that gymnasium. So, I can say for the Dixon Police Department, very good job protecting the kids.

The names of the suspect and the resource officer are being withheld during the investigation. "His fearless actions saved a lot of lives", Langloss said.

The teenager was taken into custody near the school and is now under medical supervision. Dallas was not harmed in the exchange of gunfire, but Milby received non-life-threatening injuries.

Howell said the suspect was taken into custody and is now receiving medical treatment for what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

"We're lucky the officer was there".

Lee County Sheriff John Simonton tells Sauk Valley Media he is a 19-year-old former student. The Dixon High School and all Dixon Public Schools are on lockdown. Then, the officer was able to fire back at the alleged shooter, hitting him, according to Dixon City Manager Danny Langloss. No students or staff were injured in the incident.

No one else was hurt in the shooting, officials said.

Responding officers found that students and staff had barricaded classroom doors with desks, bookcases and other objects as they learned in training, Howell said. Dixon is located about 100 miles west of Chicago.
