Antoine Griezmann struck twice as Atletico Madrid powered past Marseille to lift their third Europa League title in nine years.

Marseille football fans have created a massive wall of flares in support of their team as they took on Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

The goal took the Frenchman's tally to 29 in 48 games in all competitions this season. It was a slow start to the campaign, and some fans got on his back early on, but he has found his feet at the flawless time, proving decisive tonight with two finishes expected of one of the best centre forwards on the planet.

"There has been joy and sadness, but I am so happy and I hope to be able to live moments like this again".

"They want to win the Champions League and the Europa League, but we will play with our heart".

The France global forward then had a powerful shot deflected behind by Luiz Gustavo (52') and Diego Godin headed narrowly wide from the resulting corner (53') as Diego Simeone's men pressed menacingly.

"We let our chance go in the first half". We had the best chance first up and then we made a mistake that cost us a goal.

With the likes of Dimitri Payet and Florian Thauvin shining in attack, Marseille have impressed throughout the campaign.

Atletico captain Gabi then wrapped up the scoring late on, and celebrated like a man who would prefer to forget he called this competition "sh*t" when his side dropped into it from the Champions League last December.

However, they will be without Diego Simeone on the sidelines.

Just being in this final, their 19th European game of the season, was an achievement for Garcia's team.

Garcia withdrew the unsafe Lucas Ocampos for Clinton N'Jie as he looked for a different way back into this game, ahead of a period of some niggle from both sides as tempers heated up. The Cameroonian's attempt at a touch was bad, and Gabi pounced on the loose ball, sending Griezmann through to finish.

Marseille wasted some opportunities to get back in the game, with Atletico controlling the pace. Only a precisely timed Bouna Sarr challenge prevented Angel Correa bearing down on Mandanda (48') before Koke's pass found a rampaging Griezmann, whose delicate chip over Mandanda and into the net belied the breakneck speed at which he was moving (49').

Without their inspirational midfielder, the French side caused Atletico just one major scare as ex-Fulham striker Kostas Mitroglou headed against the post.
