Following the announcement, joint-Chairman David Sullivan stated (via Sky Sports): "I would like to place on record my honest thanks to David Moyes and his staff for achieving the target of keeping West Ham United in the Premier League".

Former Everton and Manchester United boss Moyes was appointed until the end of this season last November, following a terrible start to the campaign under predecessor Slaven Bilic.

"I would like to place on record my honest thanks to David Moyes and his staff for achieving the target of keeping West Ham United in the Premier League", co-Chairman David Sullivan said.

The club said they would seek to recruit a "high-calibre" manager within the next 10 days.

The former Manchester United boss reportedly met with the senior figures at West Ham on Monday, and despite the club's co-owner, David Gold, publicly revealing that he hoped Moyes would stay on, the manager has ended up leaving the club.

In addition to Moyes, West Ham have also confirmed that his assistants Alan Irvine, Stuart Pearce and Billy McKinlay have also left the London Stadium.

'He is a top manager and I think he'd have done a wonderful job for us, ' Sullivan said at the time. "It's not a problem".

Despite shortening betting odds, speculation linking him with Everton in the wake of Sam Allardyce's sacking has yet to rise above murmur as his compatriot Marco Silva leads the field of potential successors. "It will only cause problems, they will leave after 10 or 12 games and then everyone will be saying let's get in a Sam Allardyce or a David Moyes to keep us up".

On Tuesday fellow co-chairman David Gold had claimed he wanted Moyes to stay but in a statement on Wednesday Sullivan said the club had made a decision to "move in a different direction".

"No team can suffer that kind of situation".
