Germany announce 27-man squad; Gotze, Can, Mustafi dropped

Even if Neuer fails to return to fitness in time to make the World Cup, Germany have Barcelona No. 1 Marc-Andre ter Stegen to call upon instead.

Joachim Low has extended his stay as Germany head coach and named Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in his provisional squad for the forthcoming World Cup. "It's hard to imagine playing at a tournament like the World Cup without any prior match practice".

Neuer's Bayern team-mate Sandro Wagner has missed out - the striker's decision to leave Hoffenheim in January to play second fiddle to Robert Lewandowski at the Allianz Arena ultimately backfiring as Low selected uncapped Frieburg forward Nils Petersen. He has been named amongst four goalkeepers, one of whom will be cut for the final 23-man squad which must be named by June 4. "We saw that we're not as good as we're always told we are - and perhaps some of us think we are".

Mario Gotze, who scored the victor against Argentina in the final four years ago, has been axed following a disappointing season at Borussia Dortmund.
