Prince Philip makes first appearance since hip operation

There had been concerns that Philip would not be attending his grandson Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle on Saturday as he had been convalescing after hip replacement surgery five weeks ago.

Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, is rallying in advance of the royal wedding of his grandson, Prince Harry, and made his first appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

The couple are riding in a brick-built carriage being drawn by horses along Windsor Great Park's Long Walk towards the castle, surrounded by 500 spectators, recreating the real life procession that is planned for the big day on May 19. It's the first time he's been seen since the operation.

He was spotted chatting to the Queen through the car's open window, and also pictured watching the show with a pair of binoculars.

Kensington Palace has said they hope the Queen's 96-year-old consort will be well enough to attend the wedding following his hip operation on April 4.

The Duke looked to be in great spirits, as he remarkably drove himself around the grounds of Windsor Castle, smiling as he chatted with the Queen, who was outside the auto.

Images, posted to an Instagram page, show the unusual choice of tag splashed across road signs and walls where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's coach will travel through on the day of their nuptials.

Princess Anne visited her father at the King Edward VII hospital where she said the Duke was "in good form".

There had been some doubts over whether he would be well enough to go.

Prince Philip was forced to miss the annual Easter mass last month too, which most of the royal family attended. It's thought that Catherine and William made the trip with their baby son to Windsor Castle, to introduce him to both Prince Philip and the Queen.
