Who is Himanshu Roy?

The ex-ATS Chief Himanshu Roy was an IPS officer of Maharashtra Cadre of 1988 batch.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, on Friday, stated that with the demise of former Maharashtra Anti Terrorist Squad Chief, Himanshu Roy's the state has lost a very capable Police Officer.

Roy, who served as Maharashtra ATS chief, allegedly shot himself using his own revolver at his residence in Mumbai today. He was rushed to a hospital but declared dead on arrival. Of the many senior police officials who visited Roy's residence, Manoj Kumar Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (zone 1) said, "It is very saddening and shocking".

While Mr Roy was heading the anti-terror squad, he arrested software engineer Anees Ansari for allegedly planning to blow up the American School in Bandra Kurla complex. During his tenure at the Crime Branch, Roy successfully investigated sensitive cases such as 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, Kamla Mill gang-rape case, IPL spot fixing case of 2013 and Minakshi Thapa murder case. I had referred him to a doctor and it was then after check-ups it was found that the cancer had spread to his brain.

In conversation with Mumbai Live's reporter Bhagyeshree Bhuvad with the Executive Director of Humanity Care Center and Cancerologist, Dr. Raj Nagarkar informed that "Roy was responsing well to the treatment".

Leading investigations into several high-profile cases, Roy had an imposing figure and a charismatic personality.

Roy's suicide shocked the police community. "Roy has mentioned in his suicide note that no one should be held responsible for his death and that he is taking this step due to the illness", said additional commissioner of police (south region) Pravin Padwal. "This was completely unexpected". "He was a fitness freak and a nice person", he told Free Press Journal. "For the past two years, the late Himanshu Roy was in severe pain on account of cancer and was on medical leave". The cancer had spread to his bones.
