NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Saints were planning to make Alvin Kamara their "featured" back even before Mark Ingram's four-game suspension.

The NFL has handed Ingram a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. The suspension means that Ingram won't be on the field for the Saints' home games against Tampa Bay (Week 1) and Cleveland (Week 2), or road games against Atlanta (Week 3) and the New York Giants (Week 4).

Although Ingram is eligible to participate in all offseason practices and preseason games, the NFL Network, citing a source, reported that he skipped voluntary workouts and plans to bypass the Saints' organized team activities because he wants a new contract. Ingram and Kamara made league history in 2017 by becoming the first backfield teammates to each surpass 1,500 yards from scrimmage.

Kamara rushed for 728 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 6.1 yards per carry, and also amassed 81 receptions for five more scores in his rookie campaign. However, it was expected to remain a 1A/1B situation after that worked out so well a year ago for the NFC South champions. "This is also why New Orleans hasn't shopped him". So that competition will be worth monitoring this summer.

Ingram, 28, was the Saints' first-round pick (28th overall) in the 2011 NFL draft out of Alabama, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2009 and helped the Crimson Tide win the national championship.

He has 5,362 rushing yards, 1,428 receiving yards and 48 touchdowns during his seven-year career.
