Overseas, the mega-superhero mashup grossed another $162.6 million for a foreign total of $713.3 million and $1.164 billion worldwide.

Avengers: Infinity War is finishing up its second week at the box office and while it crushed so many records in its path, one was just out of their reach.

Domestically, the film took in another US$112 million - the second biggest second weekend ever, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens - and has now made US$450 million in the United States and Canada.

The first of a two-part installment from the Marvel Entertainment franchise, "Infinity War" garnered $112.5 million from theaters in the USA and Canada, ComScore Inc. estimated in an email Sunday.

"This rapid dash toward the enviable and exceptional 1 billion bar is a testament to this indisputable worldwide allure and drawing on power of this Marvel manufacturer", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. If Marvel is ever going to lose to anyone it definitely makes sense it would be a Star Wars film.

After having the biggest opening weekend in history, Avengers: Infinity War is continuing its battle to be the highest-earning movie of all time.

But with its enormous success, "Avengers" has left little oxygen for its competitors. Internationally, it grossed $162.6 million - including a $17.6 million opening in Russian Federation - taking its overseas total to $713.3 million. It's already surpassed its modest mid-teens production budget. Directed by Rob Greenberg and stars Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris, the plot tells the story of a spoiled playboy from Mexico's richest family and a working class single mom of three hired to clean his luxury yacht. The film is receiving a splendid response in India too.

"It's great to have a large base especially in the wake of 'Avengers, '" Presburger said. They gave Overboard an "A-" on CinemaScore.

The Chadwick Boseman-starrer landed in sixth place, taking in $3.2 million from 1,641 locations in its 12th weekend. It's the third collaboration between director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody, the team behind "Juno", and their second with Theron, who also starred in their film "Young Adult".
