Jason Day leads at the Wells Fargo Championship after 3 rounds

Twenty-four players are within seven shots of the lead heading into Sunday's final round. That's fine. Not awful, but not terrific, either. While it would take a monumental charge to change that Sunday, he played his best round of the tournament and first one under par Saturday with a three-under 68 to bring his score to one-under. And Saturday, at least, it was for good reason.

But things could have been so much better for McDowell as he handed two shots back on the 18th, finishing with a double bogey six.

"Struggled with my game, struggled to get my ball in the fairway, made some pretty bad mistakes, didn't birdie any of the par fives", said the Northern Irishman, 29: "It just was one of those days where I just couldn't get anything going". Tiger Woods didn't make up enough ground and was nine back.

His score just doesn't reflect it. "It's exciting and I'm definitely happy with how I handled myself, especially through the first eight holes, more so than I was of the back nine".

It was a better day for the Irish all round as Graeme McDowell posted six birdies in an impressive 67, which brought the 2010 US Open victor back into the top 25.

"I was so close to shooting about 7 under on that back nine, " Woods said, per Harig. Then, things got insane on Moving Day. He then added birdies at the 12th and 13th - failed to birdie the two easiest holes on the back, the 14th and 15th - and added another at the 17th. "I feel like it separates guys a little bit more". I had a couple weeks like that.

Atletico sinks Arsenal to reach Europa League final
Atletico played with fear in the first half that if we scored they could be out, but once they scored they played with a cushion.

He hit the next one across the green to 40 feet, and knocked that in for bogey. "You're trying to nearly get through the first six holes".

If only that could have continued.

Woods spent time after his second round working on the practice green, and the effects showed on the back nine as he picked up birdies on Nos.

But those back-to-back short misses spurred something in Woods, who only needed a par on No. 18 to be within striking distance of the leaders at 7 under.

Woods posted six birdies throughout his third round and was another to be undone on the final hole, ending with a bogey five as a result of a disappointing three-putt. But I'm just taking tomorrow that I've got to try and extend that lead every single time I'm up against someone.

Day's ascension was paired with a collapse from Peter Malnati, who held the lead through two rounds. Save those last two holes, and vintage Tiger Woods carries some stream into the final round. I knew good things would come. It is hard to maintain the top spot without taking advantage of par-five opportunities, let alone when one falls apart during them. "First low round of the year, I feel like, and I have to go (urinate) in a cup".
